4 C's: The Carat
The carat is a unit of measure that determines the weight of a diamond and should not be confused with its size. Diamonds with the same weight may not always be the same size. The carat unit is commonly abbreviated to 'ct'. A metric carat is equal to 0.2 grams (1.00 ct = 0.2 grm).
Each carat can be subdivided into 100 'points'. This accurate form of measurement to three decimal points allows for precision.
It is common to hear the term '50 points' or '35 points' when looking for diamonds. This common terminology is used to describe diamonds below 1.00 carat. The easiest comparison example is to think of dollars and cents, where 1 dollar equals 100 cents and 1 carat equal 100 points.
The carat weight significantly influences the price of a cut diamond. As diamonds get larger they are much more desirable and rare, and therefore more valuable. The price per carat is still heavily influenced by the cut, clarity and colour. It is important to note that all 4Cs determine the value of a diamond.
At Kalfin Jewellery we believe the quality of a diamond should not be sacrificed for size. A balance of its cut, clarity, colour and carat will always produce a more desirable outcome.
We welcome you to arrange an obligation-free consultation at our Collins Street boutique in the Melbourne CBD to explore your choices. Our tutorial with real loose diamonds will ensure you make an informed decision on the 4Cs and the various outcomes that can be achieved within your budget.
